She was born on November 18, 1927 in Florence, SC to Bessie Henderson Peters and Harry Card Peters. When her father died several weeks after her birth, Margaret and her mother returned to the family home in Dillon, SC where Margaret spent the first year of her life.

She graduated from St. John’s High School in Darlington, SC as valedictorian. When Margaret was 16, her mother married Dewitt McCall who was a loving and devoted stepfather. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg, SC for two years and graduated from Queens College in Charlotte, NC with a degree in fine arts with a major in voice and a minor in religion.

In 1950, she married Joseph Anise Baroody, the son of Lebanese immigrants Naseeb Bashara and Salwa Baroody. Joe and Margaret built a home in Florence and raised a family of three girls, Margaret, Selwa and Adele. Anyone who knew her understood that faith in God and the redeeming grace of Jesus Christ was central to her life.

She devoted daily time to in-depth study of the Bible and to prayer. Margaret was a faithful member of The First Presbyterian Church in Florence for almost 70 years. With a family history of numerous Presbyterian ministers, she believed in the need for the fellowship and community of the church family in the life of the world.

She was a member of Women of the Church, Keenagers and a Tuesday morning prayer group as well as numerous Bible studies. Margaret was devoted to her family, her faith, her friends and her broader community. She was a talented and trained singer with a beautiful voice who was a member of the First Presbyterian Church choir until the age of 90.

She also was a frequent soloist in local musical venues and church services. She spoke often of the power of the human voice to inspire our hearts and minds. Margaret was a great supporter of all the arts, recognizing their power to transform us and their importance to the life of the community.

She was also a member of The Literary Club and a Garden Club that included many of her dearest friends. Margaret and Joe’s home was a beacon of love to family and friends and their door was always open to anyone in need of a good meal, a listening ear or just a loving conversation. Margaret became an expert cook whose Lebanese dishes were legendary among her family and friends.

She believed that food could be part of her ministry in the world and was faithful in delivering her delicious creations to anyone in need. Margaret had a great compassion for the suffering of others. She, along with Peggy Key established an outreach program to underserved children of the Florence community, providing spiritual enrichment as well as tending to their basic needs.

This included trips to Camp Pee Dee and the eventual establishment of the East Florence Mission. Always seeking to serve others, Margaret continued throughout her life to visit the sick, delivering food and comfort to any and all. In her 80’s, she began a sing-a-long program at the Presbyterian home, bringing music and joy to the lives of the residents.

As a devoted mother, she instilled in her children the love and importance of family, faith, the arts and community. Her boundless love and enthusiasm not only for her children but for her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and all the children of her friends provided inspiration and support in so many lives. This extended to all she knew, her love and compassion seemingly limitless.

Margaret was an angel among us, bright and strong and able to bear our needs and our love. We are forever grateful to her. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Anise Baroody on September 28, 2004 and is survived by her daughters Margaret McCall Baroody, Selwa Baroody and Adele Baroody Weatherford (Michael Weatherford), her grandchildren Margot Weatherford, Gordon Weatherford and Hampton Weatherford, her sisters-in-law Adele Baroody Kassab and Florence Baroody Kassab, and the wife of her brother-in-law, Margaret Hinson Baroody.
