Jean Poston McPherson September 16, 1926 – February 06, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Jean Poston McPherson, 92, went to be with Jesus on February 6, 2019. She was born in Hannah, SC on September 16, 1926. The oldest child of E. Lucas and Maude Collins Poston.

She was educated in Hannah Schools, USC and Columbia College. After college, she taught school in Hannah, worked for several lawyers in Florence, was women’s editor and columnist for Florence Morning News, and worked at Guaranty Bank. In 1956 she started work at Florence Orthopedics where she became office manager and retired after 39 years.

During her time there, she brought the first brace and limb specialist (Harold Barfield), the first physical therapist (Don Lowe), and the first insurance computer to Florence. After retirement, she was very active in her church where she served as Elder, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. She was an active member of Florence Rotary for many years.

She served on the Personnel Committee of New Harmony Presbytery, The South Carolina Association Board of Directors and the Florence County Senior Center (The Leatherman Center) Commission. She loved gardening and could look at a seed or cutting and it would “take root” and grow. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Seab Thomas McPherson; brother Jerry Poston, and sister Jossie Brown. She is survived by her children: Cherry (Barney) Mattenson, Artie (Tricia) McPherson, and Charlie (Becky) McPherson; grandchildren: Kim M. Robinson, Jas (Leah) McPherson, Lucas (Piper) McPherson, Megan McPherson, Brandon (Ashleigh) McPherson, Caleb McPherson, and Cody McPherson; great-grandchildren: Seaby McPherson, Jase McPherson Turner, Pippa McPherson, and Perri McPherson; sisters: Mattie Faye Cagle, Muriel Hanna, and Patsy (Donald) Richardson; and dear friend, confidant and caregiver Tabatha Watson; and a very large extended family. Memorial service will be held at Hopewell Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2019, with visitation to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Missions Fund. Arrangements are being made by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
