Obituary for Maria Alice Barry Maria A. Barry passed away peacefully at her home in Seaside on Wednesday, January 24th, 2018. Maria was born to Fernando and Felipa dos Santos in Viseu, Portugal, on April 24th, 2018. While attending university in Lisbon, she met a handsome and dashing Marine, Leonard L. Barry, assigned to the U.S. Embassy there in Lisbon, where he said, “It was love at first sight”.

Through their courtship, with an interpreter, they eventually married and spent a beautiful and adventurous life together. As the wife of a military man, they took residence in many places, including: Oceanside, CA, Jackson, MI, Columbus, GA, Bad Nauheim Germany, Logan, Utah, Fort Ord, CA, Gelnhausen, Germany, Lisbon, Portugal, Aschaffenburg, Germany, and then back to Fort Ord where SGM Barry and Maria retired and took up permanent residency here on the Monterey Peninsula. She belonged to the E-9 wives club, the American Legion, Post 691 and numerous clubs and organizations.

Her passion was bowling, a sport her husband introduced her to in the 60’s, and continued throughout her life, where she met many great friends. She held many positions in the Bowling Association and traveled to numerous tournaments. Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband Leonard Barry.

She is survived by her three children, Janet and Larry Marcus of Marina, CA, Bobbee Barry of Wilsonville, OR, and her son Jack and Tammy Barry of Vancouver, WA. She is also survived by three grandsons, Chris and Alex Marcus, and Leonard Barry, who was named after his grandfather, and two great-grandsons, Ayden and Noah Marcus. A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018, from 10-11:30 am, with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:30am at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey, CA, 93940.
