Marian Hunt Moore, long time Crossett resident, passed away in Richmond, Virginia on May 24, 2019. Marian was born September 22, 1950 in Crossett, Arkansas the daughter of Albert Baldwin Moore, Jr. and Marguerite Potts Moore. Marian grew up in Crossett on Cedar St. with her three brothers.
She loved all Crossett had to offer, most particularly the yearly Crossett Rodeo. The Moores were a horse loving family and Marian reveled in the pageantry and the excitement when the cowboys came to town. In 1964 the family was transferred to Toledo, Oregon where Mr. Moore (A.B.) became the mill manager of the Georgia Pacific plant on the coast.
Marian attended Toledo High School until her graduation in 1968. She took part in many activities, excelled academically and was a member of Girls’ State her senior year. She loved Oregon and enjoyed her mother’s attempt to bring the gracious ways of the South to the Pacific Northwest.
Marian helped with many teas, fashion shows, and other events planned by her mother who excelled at making people welcome and being the hostess at vibrant and delightful get-togethers with delicious food. In the summer of 1968 the family moved back to Crossett and that fall Marian entered the freshman class at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She enjoyed her time as a young college student making new friends and experiencing sorority life.
In 1970 what had been diagnosed as a seizure disorder was found to be a brain tumor. She entered Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and underwent surgery to remove the tumor. That day determined the challenges she would face for the rest of her life.
When the family came home to Crossett they were met with the loving support of many friends and the warmth of the community which provided a framework for Marian’s healing and rehabilitation. After a few years Marian returned to Fayetteville again to finish her undergraduate degree. Her parents rotated as companions for Marian in her college apartment.
In 1976 she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Translation in 1979. Marian returned to Crossett and began the next phase of her life. She loved her church, Crossett FUMC, where she sang in the choir, belonged to an active United Methodist Women’s Circle and served in any capacity she could.
She also was active in the Junior Auxiliary and the Crossett Book Club. She lived at home with her parents and they each provided love and care for her until their deaths. After Marguerite’s death A.B. and Marian moved into the newly built care and retirement facility, The Pillars of the Community.
Both Marian and A.B. loved their time there, with good friends, good food and great care. Marian had a lifelong vivid imagination and enjoyed writing both fiction and historical non-fiction as a creative outlet. Among her creative works was a play written in honor of the Crossett Centennial about Crossett’s beginnings and early town founder, Cap Gates.
The play was produced at the First United Methodist church on the weekend of the Centennial Celebration. In 2006 Marian and Mr. A. B. moved to Richmond, Virginia to a new facility to be close to her brother Bill Moore and his family. During this time Marian worked on her plays and poetry, enjoyed visiting historical sites in Virginia and eating out with family.
Mr. A.B. died in 2011 at 98 and Marian continued to live in her care facility with devoted oversight from her Richmond family and celebrations of special events which she loved. In addition to her parents, Marian’s brother Frank Moore, and sister-in-law Barbara Moore Morgan preceded her in death. Marian is survived by her family who loved her: brother Dr. William F. Moore and wife Patricia of Virginia, brother Albert Baldwin Moore III and wife Roberta of Salem, Oregon, nephew Eric Albert Moore and wife Clara of Portland, Oregon, nephew William Moore of Richmond, niece Erin Moore of Charleston, South Carolina and niece Amanda Rich , great nieces Elisabeth Marguerite Rich and Victoria Grace Rich from Salem, Traci and Chuck Allen of Crossett, Jacob Allen and wife Emily of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Kennedy Taylor Allen of Monroe, Louisiana.
A celebration of Marian’s life is planned for Wednesday June 26, 2019 at 11:00 at the First United Methodist church in Crossett. Everyone is invited to attend this casual, music filled, celebratory event. There will be a reception in the FUMC Fellowship Hall following the service.
