Mark P. “Mac” Metzger, 93, of Carey, passed away on Friday morning, February 1, 2019 at Independence House, Fostoria. He was born on January 4, 1926, in Berwick, Ohio, to Frank B. and Olivia C. (Schlachter) Metzger. On March 31, 1951, he married Eileen Wagner.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Metzger of Carey; son, Mike (Carmen) Metzger of New Riegel; daughters, Betty (Gary) Fredritz of Carey, Jane (Kenneth Wall) Atkins of Forest and Carol (Dennis) Brickner of Tiffin; brother, Jack (Carolyn) Metzger of Toledo; sisters, Theresa (Raymond) Schindler of Harrison, Rita DeRose of Tiffin, Rosanna “Nan” Hohman of Vermillion and Donna Durbin of Sandusky; eleven grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Francis “Fritz” Metzger and Cyril Metzger; sisters, Lucy Flechtner, Marsha Gerber, Gertrude Hess and Betty Metzger; and great-grandsons, Rogan and Brody Neville. Mac did dredging work and helped build the railroad and Frontier Town at Lake Erie and Cedar Point, was also a self-employed excavator and worked for Paul Weott as a welder.

He also maintained Frenchtown Church and cemetery and dug graves for many other area cemeteries. Mac was a parishioner of All Saints Parish, New Riegel (former member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Frenchtown and was the oldest member of the New Riegel American Legion Post #354. He enjoyed repairing equipment for friends and was a handyman.

His Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at All Saints Parish at the Frenchtown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass.

Burial will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Frenchtown with military honors being conducted by the New Riegel American Legion Post #354. Friends may visit with the family from 3-8:00 P.M. on Monday, February 4, 2019 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424. Memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Hospice or to Independence House.
