Obituary for Marland G. Thomas Marland Thomas, 71 Kearney resident Marland G. Thomas, 71, of Kearney died Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Mt. Carmel Home in Kearney. Memorial services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project. Condolences may be shared online at www.

osrfh.com. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services. Marland was born November 7, 1946 in Kearney, NE to Belva and Ila Marie (Maurer) Thomas.

He grew up in Gibbon, NE and received his education at Gibbon High School, graduating in 1964. He then attended Automotive School in Colorado. In 1966, Marland enlisted in the United States Army.

Marland was united in marriage to Diana Whaley on November 18, 1967 in Kearney, NE. He served in Vietnam from October of 1968 until he was honorably discharged in October of 1969. Marland was a longtime employee of Eaton Corporation, retiring in 2006 after 37 years of employment.

Marland was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, farming, tractors and collecting belt buckles. Marland loved raising donkeys, mules and horses, but most of all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Diana Thomas of Kearney; daughter, Nicole Deters and husband, Brad of Laurie, MO; son, Jeff Thomas of Lincoln; grandchildren, Austin Deters and wife Jennie, Hunter Deters, Cooper Deters, Skylar Deters and Alyssa Thomas; sisters, Bonnie Schurer of Wood River, NE, Sharon Neal and husband Larry of North Platte, NE, Cheryl Wortman and husband, Terry of Sapulpa, OK; brother, Garry Thomas and wife Beverly of Wood River, NE; as well as, several nieces, nephews and extended relatives. Marland was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack Thomas and Maynard Thomas; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hobe and Darlene Whaley.
