Marlys’ Obituary Marlys Frances Behrends, age 80, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ernest and Gertje (Hippen) Kalkwarf on January 14, 1939, in Ackley, Iowa. She graduated from Ackley High School in 1957. After graduation, Marlys worked in Iowa Falls at the Ben Franklin Store until she returned home to be with her mother.

She then worked at Ackley Bakery until her mother’s death. On February 7, 1975, Marlys was united in marriage with Raymond Richard Behrends at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived in Parkersburg and Marlys worked at Hazel’s Variety until it closed.

She then worked for the Presbyterian Home in Ackley. From 1987 until 2002, Marlys and Ray cleaned medical centers for Allen Hospitals. Marlys trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in April 1961.

She fellowshipped with Christians at the Hampton Gospel Hall. After her marriage, she transferred to the Hitesville Gospel Hall. Marlys enjoyed crocheting and working on Sudoku puzzles.

She also loved playing cards and games with friends. On December 28, 2018, Marlys fell on the ice. She had many complications from that fall and died on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Ray on June 30, 2002; her parents, one sister, Gertrude Knipfel; two brothers, Johnny in infancy and Ernie Kalkwarf. Marlys is survived by four nieces and nephews, Robert (Joan) Knipfel of Mattawan, Michigan, Janice Knipfel of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Emery (Anna) Knipfel of Mattawan, Michigan and Jimmy (Nancy) Knipfel of Schoolcraft, Michigan. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 15, at the Hitesville Gospel Hall in rural Aplington with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in rural Ackley.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
