OBITUARY Martha Beaty Bottomley September 28, 1925 – October 13, 2018 Martha Beaty Bottomley of Vestavia, departed this life peacefully at home on October 13, 2018 at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her parents, James Temple Beaty and Abbie Pace Beaty Wilson; stepfather, Eugene A. Wilson; son, John Eugene and husband, William H. Bottomley of 72 years. She graduated from Ensley High School in 1942 at the age of 16.

Too young to be hired in a defense job, she changed her birth certificate to show her age as 18, and worked at Bechtel – McCone and Parsons doing her part to help with the WWII War efforts by working on Army Air Force transporters and bombers. She subsequently was graduated in 1946 from Jefferson – Hillman School of Nursing. As a part of her nursing training, she was enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Cadet Corps.

She was in charge of Jefferson’s 10 East floor, when on her assigned shift. After receiving her Registered Nurse certificated and passing the state boards, she accepted a position at McNease Roberson General Hospital in Fayette, AL. She served there until her marriage on December 27, 1946.

She was employed at Ponce de Leon Ear, Nose and Throat Infirmary in Atlanta. One of her memorable experiences was assisting in removing a nail from a child’s stomach by using a magnet which the child swallowed with milk while Martha held the string. Before her retirement in 1986, she was Assistant Chief Nurse for the Children and Youth Project, specializing in adolescent care and diabetic teaching.

Martha is a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church where she helped in the church office on Sunday mornings. Martha had a great sense of humor and was a huge animal lover. She is survived by her 2 sons, William Bottomley III of Metairie, LA and David Bottomley of Atl.

She is also survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Dolce and son-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey Dolce, 2 grandsons, Nick Dolce, David Dolce and his wife, Francine; four beautiful great grandchildren; Alayna, Camilla, Vera and Dominic Dolce and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to also acknowledge the caregivers from Visiting Angels, Alisicia Owens, Chynon Smith, Jasmine Foy, Kim McGhee, Brianna Rayford and Amy Rowell and hospice, Alacare, Erin Parker, Teri Davis, David Koenig, Jessica Zahorscak and Chaplin Alton King.

Thank you for their loving care that they showed her during her last earthly days. Also thank you to Ashton from Steel City for being so gentle when taking mother from the house. Instead of flowers, please give donations to Pound on the Hill Animal Shelter or Two by Two, No Kill Shelters.

Family will receive friends at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel Monday October 22, 2018 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday October 23, 2018 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
