Martha’s Obituary Martha Louise Krueger Schroeder was born September 1, 1922 at the family farm Southwest of Gilead, NE to Fred & Katie (Vorderstrasse) Krueger. Martha attended school District #97 south of her home through the 8th grade and one year at the Academy in Hebron. She was baptized on September 17, 1922 and confirmed on April 5, 1936 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church southwest of Gilead.

Her confirmation verse Romans 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”. On October 12, 1947 she was united in marriage to Armin Schroeder at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron and to this union was born two children James Frederick and Vaniece Katharine. The couple lived on a farm southeast of Hebron until 1972 when they moved into Gilead.

Martha loved her family and friends and was always willing to help someone in need. She babysat for lots of children and her grandchildren since she loved having the children around her. She worked many places but especially enjoyed her years working at the café in Gilead and baking pies there.

She also enjoyed being outdoors mowing or caring for her flowers. If there was an empty spot she planted another flower. Indoors she loved to bake especially cookies for the kids and crocheting “to her hearts content”.

At the age of nearly 96 ½ she passed away peacefully at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron where she had resided for many years, on February 12, 2019. Martha is preceded in death by her husband, parents and in-laws Fred & Katie Schroeder, brothers & sisters-in-law Paul (Alvina) Krueger, Herman (Betty) Krueger, Karl (Alene) Krueger, Hilmar Krueger, also brothers-in-law Orval Elting and Gerald Vortman. Martha is survived by her son James (Kathy) Schroeder and daughter Vaniece (Wayne) Ough.

Grandchildren include Ryan (Nok) Schroeder, Shelly (Ryan) Barton and son Brock, Dusty (Rachel) Mathy, Terry & Olivia, Lee & John Achtemeier & Andrew Mathy, also sisters Hilda Vortman & Esther Elting & sister-in-law Lucille Krueger, many nieces, nephews & friends. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday February 18, 2019 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church – Gilead. The family will greet friends on Sunday February 17th from 2 to 4 pm at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury.
