WEST SPRINGFIELD Mary Alice (Derby) Blodgett passed away September 3rd at her home in the arms of her husband. Mary was the loving wife of Richard Blodgett. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Derby.

She leaves behind a sister Joanne and her husband Alan Berte. Mary was born June 1, 1953 and raised in West Springfield. She attended St. Thomas Elementary School, West Springfield High School and STCC.

Her career began at Johnson’s Bookstore and continued over the years at Barnes & Noble and Lauriats’ as their manager. Mary was a sweet soul who will be greatly missed by her extended family and friends. Mary and Richard met in 1980, married in 1985 and had 38 years of a great life together.

Mary always had the intention of writing her own obituary. Unfortunately, she never did. During her illness, she never spoke of this.

She showed tremendous courage with her health issues. She wanted to get better and was willing to face it head on. I couldn’t have been more proud of her.

Over the years, Mary became a fantastic cook. When she would put something together for a family dinner, what she had made always stood out. In our life together, we did our share of traveling.

Alaska, Hawaii, Plum Island, Newport and so much more. But staying at home and having dinner together was an everyday event and it was special. Mary was a private person.

There weren’t many who had known she had been ill the last few months. This was her way and I respected her wishes. God bless Mary and keep her safely in Your care.

There will be a Memorial Service September 15th at Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home at 8:30-10:30 a.m. 2049 Northampton St., Holyoke, MA. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
