Mary E. Lund, age 89, of Boscobel formerly of Barnum, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Care and Rehab of Boscobel. She was born October 31, 1929, at Steuben, WI to Roy and Velva (Dillman) Groom. She was married at Elkader, IA to William Lund and he preceded her in death on May 17, 2008.

Mary graduated from Boscobel High School and then attended and received a degree from the La Crosse School of Cosmetology. She then worked along side her husband Bill on the farm, cooking, baking and caring for her “seven” boys. She also worked off the farm at Royal Parlor Furniture, Hobbi-Stitch and the Wilson State Nursery, all in Boscobel and at the Sunrise and Kickapoo Orchards in Gays Mills.

Mary loved her family and enjoyed every minute she could spend with her kids, grandkids, sisters, other relatives and friends. She was a great cook who always made sure there was a great dessert to go along with her delicious and hearty meals. She always raised a large garden and used the bounties of her hard labor each year to preserve hundreds of jars of green beans, sweet corn, tomatoes, carrots and pickles, as well as canned beef.

Mary was well known throughout the area for her quilt making ability. Over the years, she made quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and won numerous blue ribbons and merit awards whenever she entered them in competition. She was also a master at sewing and made many clothes for her children as they were growing up.

In addition to sewing clothes, she also knitted hats, scarves, mittens and sweaters for the boys and family. Among her other talents, she refinished furniture, including tables, desks, and chests of drawers, many times by stripping off layers of paint, then spending hours hand sanding each piece and finally staining and putting on several layers of sealant. She also reupholstered furniture, including sofas and chairs and learned the art of caning so she could repair the seats and backs of caned furniture.

In her “spare” time, she loved dancing with her husband Bill, playing cards, especially euchre, Dirty Clubs and 500, and listening to country western music. She was a member of the Congregational Church and the McCormick-Rose Legion Auxiliary of Gays Mills. She is survived by 3 sons, Greg (Mary Jane) Lund of Boscobel, Ed (Maggie) Lund of Gays Mills and Joe (Bernice) Lund of Soldiers Grove; grandchildren, Terry Lund, Kari Jo Sawvell, Victor Syverson, William Lund, Melissa Lund, Jesse Lund, Andy Lund, Anjie Whiteaker, Todd Lund, Reggie Lund, Renee Helin, Mandy Van Natta, Heather Rice, Kim Blaha, Kyle Lund and Traci Davis; 24 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lola Childs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Lund; sons, Gene, Glen and Randy; sisters, Betty Atkinson and Pat Ward: brother-in-law, John Atkinson, Larry Ward, Clyde Lund and Ray Childs; sister-in-law, Dorothy Lund and Tanda Featherston. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home, 104 Fremont St. Boscobel, WI 53805, Pastor Carrie Anderson will officiate, and burial will be at the Haney Ridge Cemetery.
