Obituary for Mary Esther Burlingame Funeral service for Mary Esther Burlingame will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at MMS-Payne Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Dawes Cemetery in Chelsea. Family will greet friends on Monday, May 14, from 5-8 pm Mary Esther Burlingame passed from this life on Monday, May 7, 2018.
She was 85 years old. The daughter of Audie and Mary (Pollock) Cantrell was born on Easter Sunday April 16, 1933 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They then moved to the rural Claremore area.
She eventually attended Foyil public schools graduating with the class of 1951. A short time later while out with a friend. Mary met Joe Burlingame while in Claremore.
They would marry on September 3, 1951, at her parents’ home. Marriage to Joe took her to several places, including Stillwater, Colorado Springs, Ohio, and eventually the Oklahoma City area. There she worked for the McFarland Methodist Church in their day care.
It was also during this time that she was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America. She was the den mother for a scout troop at the Cerebral Palsy Center in Norman. She earned the Silver Fawn award for her work there.
At that time it was the highest award a female could receive. In the 1980’s Mary moved back to Claremore. She became a member of the Friendly Foyil Baptist Church.
In her spare time she enjoyed quilting and crocheting, but spending time with her family was her first love. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, son, Billy Joe Burlingame, Jr.; husband of 58 years, Billy Joe Burlingame, Sr. and sister, Dorothy Bradshaw. Survivors include her sons, Mike Burlingame and wife Melinn, David Burlingame, Keith Burlingame and wife Arisha; daughter, Barbara Burlingame and wife Nolonda; grandchildren, Kate Green and husband Matt, Kelsey Daniels and husband Joost, Michale Joe Burlingame, and Megan Burlingame; great-grandchildren, Logan and Kaylie Green, and daughter-in-law, Lori Burlingame.
