Mary Johnson Lewis December 14, 1921 – December 18, 2018 Share this obituary Local Florists Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card LEWIS, Mary Johnson, passed peacefully on December 18, 2018, in the hospice unit of St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Va. , after celebrating her 97th birthday on December 14, 2018. She was born in Western North Carolina in 1921.
Mary Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, Paul G. Lewis, after a long and loving marriage. Mary Lewis is survived by her children, Linda L. Fletcher (Wayne Fletcher) of Manakin-Sabot, Va. and Kenneth P. Lewis of Atlanta, Ga.
; granddaughters, Amy Hale (Chris) and Christy Fletcher (Casey Thomas, fiance); and great-grandsons, Graham-Michael Fletcher-Mintz and Conner Cummings. Mary Lewis worked in Elkton, Maryland, during World War II at an ammunition factory. This is where she met Paul Lewis.
They were married in 1944 and moved to Virginia, settling in Richmond to start a successful landscaping business together. She took great pride in her years of working in the catalog department at Sears-Roebuck. She was active in Berea Baptist Church in Hylas, Va.
, and in the Rockville, Va. , community. Mary Lewis enjoyed traveling, sewing and gardening in her spare time.
In her later years, Mary Lewis was a resident at Our Lady of Hope and Manor House Assisted Living in Richmond, Va. While at these facilities, she enjoyed sponsored activities and being with her many friends and acquaintances. Some of her favorite activities were bingo, coloring, Bible study, painting and outings on the bus.
Her warm, endearing personality, her contagious smile and positive attitude will be missed by all. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, where her services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Goochland County, Va.
