OBITUARY Mary Lu (Meeks) Durham March 3, 1934 – January 25, 2019 Play Tribute Movie Mary Lu (Sherman) (Meeks) Durham, 84 died on Friday, January 25, 2019 at her residence in Fort Wayne. She was born in Portland, IN on 3/3/1934 to Warren and Merle Sherman. She married the love of her life, Donald Meeks in 1953, he passed away at age 31 in 1961.

Mary Lu was an incredible woman, who at age 27 was widowed left to raise her only daughter alone. She enrolled in St. Francis College and ultimately graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Education. Her career in teaching began at Justin Study and when Lindley opened she transferred there and eventually retired there in 1993.

She loved all her students and always took an interest in helping them succeed. At age 41 she remarried, Forrest Durham and they were married for 20 years when he passed away. She was a former member of Simpson UMC and First Missionary Church and current member of Good Shepherd UMC.

Mary Lu is survived by her daughter, Chris (Joe) Byers. Her grandchildren, Lucas (Kim) Byers and their children Lauren and Gage residing in Denver Co. Casey (Brent) Peterson and their children, Beau, Kara, Max and Rex, in Fort Wayne. Her brother, Mack (Pam) Sherman from Twin Lakes, WI and their children, Joe (Stephanie) Sherman and their children CJ and Teagan in Golden, CO.

Drew (Briita) Sherman and their children, Maddie, Sierra, and Garrett in WI. Mack Sherman and his children, Kastyn, Jasmyn, Jayda and Stella in WI. She is also survived by 2 step children and their families, from Smiths, AL Ron (Shelia) Durham and their children Russ (Kristin), Travis and Mae.

Debra (Bill) Carpenter and their children Ted and Kim. She is also survived by many close cousins and lifelong friends, especially Rick and Karen Allen. She was preceded in death by both husbands Don Meeks and Forrest Durham and her favorite TV Deputy Barney Fife.

She had a great sense of humor and she will be missed by all of us who loved her so much. She and the family would like to publicly thank the many devoted physicians who cared for her during her lifetime, Drs. Joe Muhler, Matthew Carr, Eustace Fernandes, Mark Meier and Shawn Lazoff.

Funeral Service 11:00 am Thursday, January 31, 2019 at D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Home Covington Knolls with calling one hour prior. Calling 2-4pm and 6-8pm, Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Home Covington Knolls. Burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
