It is with great sadness the family of Maurice E. Core, 89, Columbus, Ohio announces his passing at Brookdale Pinnacle, Grove City, Ohio on August 29, 2018. Born in Pleasantville, Iowa, Core moved to Indianola, Iowa with his family in 1943 where he grew up on a large livestock farm. Following graduation from high school he attended Simpson College for one year and then transferred to Iowa State University where he earned a degree in Agriculture.
While in college he was a member of the winning team, and 3,d high individual at the 1951 National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest, Was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Agricultural Fraternity. Core’s illustrious career in livestock judging started while in 4-H work. He was a member of the winning 4-H Dairy Judging Team, and 3,d high individual at the 1945 National Dairy Cattle Congress and high’ individual in the National Hereford Judging Contests.
Following college graduation Core was herdsman for Curtiss Candy Farms, Cary, Illinois. From there he launched a 37 year career with The American Jerse. y Cattle Association In 1956.
During this 37 year period he served as Fieldman in the mid-west for three years and then joined the home office staff in Columbus, Ohio in 1959. He held every position in the organization including Executive Secretary from 1985 until his retirement in 1993. Retirement did not.
last long. In 1997 he agreed to serve. as the Executive Director of National Dairy Shrine, a position he held for 11 years.
Core received numerous honors in the dairy industry including Guest of Honor by National Dairy Shrine, American Jersey Association Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Graduate of Iowa State University, Honorary Life Member of National Pedigree of Livestock Council and Honorary Lifetime Councilor of the World Jersey Cattle Bureau. Most recent was being named World Dairy Expo Industry Person of the year in 2009. Maurice will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Cinthia Core of Bokeelia, FI and Sharin Adkins (Jay) of Orient, OH and one son David Core of Columbus, OH.
Also survived by six grandchildren, Shannon Rowley-Suver (Jared), Christin Rowley, Sheridan Yamanaka (Tsuyoshi), Sean Rowley, Troy Adkins III, Elizabeth Winterhoff (Chris) and two great grandchildren, Tristan Rowley and Gabbi Wagner.
