Howe, 72, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Friday afternoon, January 25, 2019 at South Central Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Born March 22, 1946 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, Maurice was the son of Carmel Agnes Howe and raised by his grandparents Agnes Headman-Howe and Elmer Howe and the East Timber. He received his education in White Eagle, Oklahoma and Ft.

Sill Indian School where he graduated. He then went to Chilocco Indian School where he received his post grad certification as a heavy equipment operator. Following school, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War where he was also a Green Beret.

After his honorable discharge from the Army he worked a short time as a firefighter in Wyoming and then moved to Dallas, Texas and began his career as a heavy equipment operator working on the highways between Texas and Kansas. Maurice was united in marriage to Cleta Downen on August 25, 1979 at the house of a family friend in Burden, Kansas. The couple made their home in Burden where Maurice continued his career as a heavy equipment operator for Shore and Sons.

In 1984 he began working for Gott/Rubbermaid and he remained with the company for over 23 years from which he retired. After retirement, in 2007 he worked for a year as a guard for the Department of Corrections in Winfield, and later worked security for First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and at Walmart in Winfield, Kansas where he was currently working when he became seriously ill. He was a member of the Ponca Nation of Oklahoma, and the Ponca Indian Baptist Church near White Eagle, Oklahoma.

He was an avid Oklahoma Sooner football fan. He enjoyed fishing, listening to music, Gourd Dancing, and everyone knows he loved his frybread. Maurice had many fond memories of Chilocco and remained in contact with many life long friends he met there.

Maurice is survived by his wife Cleta Howe of Burden; his sons John Dennis Howe of Burden; Rodney Mann and wife, Barri of Udall; sister Delrayne Roy of McLoud, OK; brothers, Warren Roy of Carnegie, OK; Steve Roy and Thomas Roy of Ponca City, OK; grandchildren, Ryan Mann, Jennica Mann, Kyle Sadler, Coty Avina, Whitney Rowe, Warren Howe, Shelby Mann, Joel Howe, Desiree Howe, Derrick Keith, Kayla Howe, Logan Howe, Reece Howe, Anastasia Voelker; and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his mother and grandparents, Maurice was preceded in death by seven brothers, Dennis Badoman, Freddie Mallet, Elmer Roy, Robert Roy, John Roy, Darrell Green, and Marvin Knudsen. The traditional feast and giveaway will be held at the Ponca Tribe Culture Center at noon with funeral services being held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Ponca Indian Baptist Church in White Eagle, Oklahoma.

Interment will follow at the Ponca Tribe Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service of Winfield, Kansas is in charge of arrangements.
