Mayme’s Obituary Mayme M. Holmberg, 97, passed away Friday, February 8, 2019 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD. Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Thursday, February 14 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Viborg, SD. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, February 13 at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville, SD, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Mayme Andersen was born January 21, 1922 at the homestead (Elmhurst Farm), rural Centerville, SD to Henry and Cecelia (Smith) Andersen. She attended grade school at Rose Cottage in Lincoln County, high school in Centerville and Grandview College in Des Moines, IA. She married Robert Holmberg on June 20, 1943 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Viborg, SD.
To this union, 6 children were born. Mayme was a charter member of the Centerville Country Garden Club and the Friendly Few Extension Club. She was a life-long member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Viborg and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years.
She was a member of the WELCA, taught Bible School and Sunday School. She was active in Al-Anon. The Centerville Library was very important to Mayme and she served on their board and organized the “annual plant sale” to help raise money for the newly created community library and other worthy causes.
Mayme had an assortment of talents. She was an exceptional seamstress and could make or re-make anything you asked for. She was able to re-purpose any number of things long before it became a fad to do so.
She had a real love of flowers and was always happy to share that knowledge with anyone. She was more than willing to send a plant home with anyone who showed any interest. She has passed on that passion to each of her children.
She was the world’s best short-order cook. She could whip up a meal or a pie in no time flat. You never wanted for a treat when you came to see her.
There was always a cookie available along with a Mountain Dew. Music was very important to Mayme and brought her much joy. She wanted her children to love it, too, and all of her children had piano lessons.
She made many sacrifices to make that happen. This passion continued throughout her life and she could often be heard humming or singing. She has touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed.
Mayme is survived by her four sons, Fredrick (Janet) Holmberg, Centerville, SD, Robert (Debbie) Holmberg, Denver, CO, Douglas (Julie) Holmberg, Norfolk, NE, and Steven (Linda) Holmberg, Centerville, SD; two daughters, Linda (Wayne) Larsen, Viborg, SD and Marilyn (Kevin) McLaury, Montana City, MT; 17 grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Nelsen, Ellen (Bill) Blauert, Eric Holmberg, Michael (Melissa) Holmberg, Mark Holmberg, Jeffrey (Veronica) Holmberg, Adam (Billy) Holmberg, Aaron (Michelle) Holmberg, Bradley (Nicole) Holmberg, Gregory (Sara) Holmberg, Kevin Holmberg, Brett Holmberg, Scott (Ashley) Larsen, Mitchell (Dominique) Larsen, Troy (Kayla) Larsen, Tanner McLaury and Conner McLaury; 23 great-grandchildren; her brother, Vernon (Beverly) Andersen, Centerville, SD; and beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents, Henry and Cecelia Andersen; and her siblings, Oscar (Maurine) Andersen, Lawrence Andersen, Ellen (Harry) Jensen, Priscilla (Lowell) Voog, and Harry Andersen. Memorials may be given in Mayme’s name to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Viborg, SD or to the Centerville Public Library Fund.
