Melanie Schwartz  – Nov. 6, 1949 – March 1, 2018 Melanie “Mel” Schwartz was born in Red Cloud, Nebraska, Nov. 6, 1949 to Kenneth and Lucyle (Von Housen) Schwartz.

She passed away peacefully March 1, 2018, in Chula Vista, California. Mel grew up in Red Cloud Nebraska, loving her horses, her sports, her family, her friends, her music, and her art. Mel graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1968.

Mel received an undergraduate degree in fine and performing arts in 1972 from the University of Nebraska and received her Master in Fine Arts and her Master in Education from the University of Iowa between 1973 and 1975. Mel was a professor of fine arts at Southwestern Oregon Community College until her retirement in 2008. In Oregon Mel enjoyed her life as a teacher and loved art, music, gardening and golfing.

Mel also started a local chapter of a global organization, Healing Strong, a group focused on helping cancer victims to ignite the fire of hope that their life and health can be restored. Melanie was preceded in death by her father, Kenny Schwartz. Mel is survived by her mother, Lucyle Schwartz; her brother, Kaune Schwartz; and her life partner, Kathleen McFeron.

Memorial Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Williams Funeral Home Red Cloud Nebraska. In lieu of flowers or cards, monetary donations can be made to the SHOC Foundation, P.O. Box 327, Gladstone, Oregon 97207; or the Dolphin Players of Coos County, P.O. Box 3264, Coos Bay, Oregon 97420.
