Obituary for Melba Smithling Utica – Melba Smithling, 94, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2018 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare. Melba was born on August 5, 1923, in Huntington, Louisiana, the daughter of Ottis and Janie (Cutrere) Sanders. On April 29, 1943, Melba married Ernest A. Smithling in Baton Rouge.

They enjoyed a blessed marriage of 28 years prior to his passing on June 24, 1971. She was employed most recently at Herb Philipson’s, New Hartford. Melba is survived by her children, Ernest Smithling, Janie Smithling, Patty (Joe) Majka and Kathy (George) Dodson; grandchildren, Diana (Paul) West, John DiPietro, Mike (Kristen) DiPietro, Eric and Ryan (Claire) Smithling, Layne (Desmond) Donella, Michelle Aucion, Pamela, Sandy and Joe Majka; several great grandchildren; nephew, Mike (Barbara) Sanders; niece, Winkie (Len) Ruiz; special friends, Bob and Margaret Platt, Ken Smith, Isabelle Hall, Maryann Sack and Michele Blowers.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Carol DiPietro; brother and sister-in-law, M. L. and Millie Sanders and daughter-in-law, Debbie Smithling. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd. , Utica.
