Melvin’s Obituary MELVIN SILVERMAN age 94, formerly of 6 Littlefield Lane, Old Lyme, passed away on Friday afternoon, February 15, 2019 at Bryn Mawr Hospital, in Bryn Mawr, PA. He was born in Norwich, CT on December 3, 1924, one of three children of Oscar and Anna Eisenstein Silverman. Melvin was married to Bernice Lear Silverman on June 20, 1948, a 65-year union that ended with her passing in 2013.

Prior to his retirement, Melvin worked with his wife in office design and furnishings for over 30 years at the family-owned business, Apex Office Supplies in New London. Prior to this, he had been a partner in C&S Ford in the Willimantic area: a pharmacist with his father-in-law, Joseph Lear, at Court Drug Store on Court Street in New London, CT; and in numerous youthful exploratory ventures, such as the Cottage Dairy in Norwich, CT. He held a pharmacy degree from the University of Connecticut and had also attended the University of Alabama prior to serving stateside in the Army during WWII.

He was also a graduate of Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, CT. Melvin was very active in the Willimantic Chamber of Commerce, as well as Temples Beth El in New London and B’Nai Israel in Willimantic, where he served a term as President of the Men’s Club, as well as serving on the Mansfield Democratic Town Committee. When not busily supporting his family and children in numerous activities and endeavors, he took great pleasure in creating woodworking projects in collaboration with his wife and was an avid golf fan.

During his final years, Melvin resided at the Quadrangle Residence on Darby Road in Haverford, PA. Melvin is survived by his children, Mark L. Silverman, MD; Karen Glick, PsyD; and Professor Judd Silverman, as well as their respective spouses, Susan, Phil, and Barry; seven grandchildren: Jill, David and Billy Silverman, Mollie, Miriam, Amy, and Matthew Glick; and great-grandchildren Gabe, Ethan, Griffin, Layla, Ruben, Lila, and Henry. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:30 am at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St, New London.

Interment will be in Beth El Cemetery, Groton. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
