Funeral Services for Merlon R. Wipperling, 79, Norfolk, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church. Reverend Robert Wiest will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at Home for Funerals Chapel, 708 Georgia Avenue. Mr. Wipperling passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019 at his home in Norfolk.

Merlon was born on July 25, 1939 to his parents August and Anna (Klusman) Wipperling in Denison, IA. He went to District 68 country school in Pierce County and high school in Randolph. In 1959, Merlon started working for Pettit Plumbing in Norfolk for three years, and then moved to San Jacinto, CA to continue his trade for three years.

Upon moving back to Norfolk, he went back to work for Pettit Plumbing until 1970 when he started with Volkman Plumbing. He worked at Volkman’s for thirty-two years and worked his way up to be a part owner. In 2002, he decided to go out on his own and started Merlon’s Plumbing.

Merlon was certified and licensed as a Master Plumber. In the fall of 1960, Merlon started bowling at the bowling alley above the Hinky-Dinky Grocery Store in Norfolk. He then bowled at the ABC Lanes many years for teams including the Montgomery Ward Team and the American Family Insurance Team.

At King’s Lanes, he bowled on many different leagues. Merlon had the opportunity to travel to a variety of bowling tournaments and he had many fond memories of his time with family and friends. Merlon was a board member of the Norfolk Men’s Bowling Association and the Norfolk Bowling Association.

He was recently inducted into the Norfolk Bowling Hall of Fame. Merlon was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.

He has served as an usher and assisted with the maintenance of the church. Merlon enjoyed spending time with his family and friends playing cards, golfing, fishing, gardening and helping others. He is survived by his children Rick of Norfolk, Laurie (Don) Adamson of Norfolk, Mindy (Brian) Evans of Osmond, and Shana (Trinity) Halsey of Norfolk, seven grandchildren Melanie, Melissa, Michelle, McKenzie, Morgan, Aleigha, and Zane, eleven great grandchildren, siblings Mabel Siegert of Norfolk, Melvin Wipperling of Lincoln, and Liz Marshall of Harvard, NE, and many nieces and nephews.

Merlon was preceded in death by his parents, sister Martha Mewis and brother Marvin Wipperling.
