Obituary for Merwin Dale Blakey Merwin Dale Blakey age 85, passed away on November 4, 2018 in the Hospital in Flower Mound, Texas. He was born on the family farm in Stark county Illinois December 11, 1932 to William Bert and Bertha Maude Roberts Blakey. He was the youngest of three boys.
He grew up on the family farm, going to the Jug run one room school house before attending Toulon High school where he was very involved in all the sports. It was there he met the only girl he every dated; Jean Van Dran whom he married on July 12, 1952 in Toulon, Illinois. He joined the Navy after High School, so they started their married life in the military during the Korean War.
Their first three children, Duana, Lynn and Steve were all born in California while he was in the navy. He was stationed in Japan and served as the radio/radar man on a seaplane patrolling the Sea of Japan. After his military service, they moved back to Illinois and lived on the family farm for a short time before moving to Champaign, Illinois to attend the University of Illinois where he graduated with his degree as an Electrical Engineer.
Their fourth child Patty was born there in his senior year. His first job was in Littleton, Colorado and it was there in 1962 that missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints found the family and they joined the church. This led to many wonderful experiences for the family and for him as he served in many different positions of leadership in all the different places they lived.
He was always willing to serve others as needed and was a great example to his family. The following years many moves were made as he changed companies. Two children were born in Georgia, Kelly and Matt.
Kathy in California and finally their last child Tisha was born in Texas. He finished his career at Texas Instruments and was the Deputy Director of the HARM missile program. Not the kind of person to sit around for long he went to work for the school district, first as a janitor and later as the secretary at Morningside Elementary in The Colony, Tx.
where he was loved by both students and teachers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean, his parents Bert and Maude Blakey and both brothers Donald and Kenneth Blakey, one daughter, Kelly Jean Blakey, one grandson Bret Blakey and one Son in law Donald Wilson. He is survived by 5 daughters Duana Blakey, Lynn Wilson, Patty [Laurel Maxwell] Osborn, Kathy Blakey and Tisha [Jeff] Miller as well as 2 sons Steve [Beth] Blakey and Matt [Tina] Blakey.
By 20 grandkids and 17 great grandchildren. One sister in law Margaret Ann Blakey and one brother in law Russell Van Dran. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 17th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 615 North MacArthur Blvd.
, Coppell, TX. Viewing at 12:00; services at 1:00 pm. A viewing will also be held on Friday night the 16th at the Flower Mound Funeral home located at 3350 Firewheel Drive, Flower Mound, Tx 75025 from 7-9 pm.
Burial will be at the DFW national cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations in his name be made to the veterans of Foreign wars organization at this link heroes. vfw.org/page/23487/donate/1?
