Michael James Granat died on May 7th, 2018. He had been ill the previous day with what appeared to be food poisoning, but seemed to be recovering. The cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.

Michael Granat was born on May 24th, 1989 at Salem Memorial Hospital. He graduated from South Salem High School in 2008. After high school, he earned a degree in history from Western Oregon University in 2012.

Michael was active in the Republican Party, and was a member of the Oregon Delegation to the Republican Party National Convention in both 2008 and 2012. He also served as the Vice Chairman of the Oregon College Republicans. After graduating from college, Michael became a businessman, and opened a candy store called the Taffy Depoe in Depoe Bay, Oregon in 2013.

He truly loved Depoe Bay, and he was active in his new community. He helped in the production of the Wooden Boat Show, played taps each year at the Fleet of Flowers ceremony, and performed Christmas carols at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony with his trumpet. He served on the Chamber of Commerce Board, and was recently appointed Chairman on the Depoe Bay Parks Commission, where he was an advocate for expanding the city’s extensive trail system.

He was actively using his history degree in the development of a new Depoe Bay Museum. Michael was a Christian who strongly supported Young Life, a Christian ministry for high school youth. More than that, he lived out his faith in the caring and kind way he treated other people throughout his life.

He is survived by his grandfather, James McCollum, his parents, Karl and Lee Granat, his brother John, his sister-in-law Andrea, whom he loved like a sister, his two beloved nephews, Wesley and Owen, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Michael was a warm, loving and kind man, who was deeply loved by those who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
