Mun Wai Jeong Obituary January 15, 1929 – November 9, 2018 Gold Beach resident, Mun Jeong passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Mun was born in a small Chinese village, 150 miles from Hong Kong and came to San Francisco when he was 9 years old to live with relatives. As a child he worked in his aunt and uncle’s grocery store, then attended Oakland Technical High School, graduating with the class of 1949 and participating in French Club, Chinese Club, R.O.T.C.

, Basketball, and Senior… Read More » Tea Committee. He later went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Golden State College in 1960. Mun served his country proudly during the Korean War as an Army Sergeant stationed in both Korea and Japan.

He received an Honorable Discharge in 1954 and was presented the Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Campaign Stars, United Nations Service Medal with three Overseas Service Bars and the National Defense Service Medal. Mun’s professional career was with the State of California, first in the Health Department, then with the PUC and finally as a Tax Auditor with the Franchise Tax Board. Mun retired to Gold Beach in 1982 at the age of 52 to continue his passion as a fly fisherman in an area he had been coming to and enjoying for many years.

He loved to tie his own flies, make spinners and fish for steelhead on the Rogue River and local creeks. Mun was always willing to share his gear and knowledge with others and was a delight to be with on the river. He also enjoyed his 9 AM tennis games, (and was known as the local tennis stringing and racket expert) photography, music, hiking and cooking.

He was especially famous for his “Mun’s Stir Fry Vegetables” with plenty of fresh garlic and ginger. He always had a cup of tea ready for whomever stopped by, but YOU had to choose between Green Tea or Oolong (the Emperor’s Choice). Mun will always be remembered for preparing packages of nuts, fruits, ginger chews, gum, and/or chocolate for his friends.

This was his way of saying thank you or goodbye. Mun truly loved Gold Beach and his friends and neighbors here. Memorials may be sent to some of his favorite charities here including Curry Public Library or the Parks Department for the Kids Castle or tennis courts.

Mun’s other worthy charities and foundations were the TB Control Section of the San Francisco General Hospital, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, Southern Oregon Public Television and the JPR Foundation.
