Nana’s Obituary The late Nana Damoa was born on July 6, 1957 at Obuasi to Madam Adwoa Fosua of the Royal family of Kokofo and Opanin Kwabena Bioh of Adansi Fomena both of blessed memory. He’s the sixth of ten siblings. Nyankomago is the name given to a child born after Tawia being male or female in Akan tradition and also born on Sunday hence the first name Akwasi.
“Akai” was a shortened name for Akwasi by a toddler in the house who couldn’t pronounce Akwasi. So it became his preferred name. Damoa enrolled at Tutuka Methodist Mission School.
He was an energetic boy who will always go to the defense of the weaker ones. He continued his Middle school education at Tutuka L /A Middle School and completed in the year 1976. He then proceeded to Kikam Technical Institute in the western Region where he stayed with his late Senior brother, J.C Pobee-Ankoma, who was then a staff of the school.
In his second year in the school his brother John Pobee Ankomah was taken ill so he had to truncate his education and moved back to Obuasi. This is where he developed his driving skills and decided to Join the Mine in Obuasi. He was recruited into the Security section of AGC as was then called, and at times his services as a driver was useful to the Security department.
In one of the mornings security parade, a staff officer who was conducting the parade sighted him, knowing him very well as the son of a suspected gold dealer, the officer stood in front of him and exclaimed “Ahaaaaa, your father has been waiting and he’s not getting it so he has asked you to come and join us so that you can get him more gold to sell” There was hilarious laughter that nearly marred the days beautiful parade. That officer was the most popular man in town called “TOO PLENTY” Nana Damoa had a special whimsical sense of humour that got him a lot of nicknames, the most popular one was Onyameba Noah. He had a lot of friends in town and in the evenings he they gathered around for socialization.
Damoa was fair, disciplined and firm but loves everyone. He used to dress elegantly and admires good fashion. Nana Damoa left behind a beautiful family of three male and four female children, namely, Armstrong, Paa Kwasi, Augustine, Mavis, Shilla, Juliana and Josephine Ankomah Bioh.
After working on the mine for three years, he resigned and started his own business trading in cattle, operating a chemical shop alongside setting up a communication center. That was the time that there was no mobile telephone on operation in the country. He took advantage of the system and got so many clients, since most people living abroad used his center to reach their family and friends back home.
All this while, he was the only son who remained in the house and committed to the father’s welfare in the absence of other male siblings. He took great care of the father until his demise in June 1992. Life got to a stage that he also decided to seek greener pastures as most of his siblings have travelled to Europe, UK and USA with exception of him.
Nana Damoah was fortunate to travel alongside with friends including his uncle Mr. Kwame Mante in the year 2002 to the United States. He had many adventures with different kinds of jobs and family lives. He finally settled with His wife Akosua Osei Ababio in East Hartford Connecticut.
Akai has finally settled with a good companion who understood each other. He was in the stage of returning home after seventeen years of sojourn and has almost completed his dream house in Kumasi to come and live a happy life. Akai started complaining of ill health in November 2018 hoping that he will fully recover and come back home to see all his children he left behind.
Even though Akai had physically left the country, he was always in regular contact with all his friends, family and a lot of people he knew before travelling. He used to call everyone he knew on phone to chat with. Akai loved his family.
He was the only closest family member who travelled all the way to Boston Massachusetts to attended the graduation of his brother Joe Forson at the prestigious HAVARD UNIVERSITY in Massachusetts It was in January 14 this year that news came that he was not well and has been taken to Hospital. Other siblings were making travel arrangements to visit him but news came through on the 27 day of January, 2019, that he had passed on to eternity. That is how life has been so cruel to us today.
It is a terrible blow to the family and loved ones but only God knows Best. Rest In Perfect peace Akwasi Nyankomago.
