Nancy Hewett Maxson passed away peacefully, Sunday, January 20, 2019, in Atlantic Beach, FL at sunset. Nancy was born on August 9,1931, the eldest child of Helen (Squire) of Clyde, OH & Larry Hewett, a popular pianist, from Lakewood, OH. Nancy loved her brother, Robert Squire Hewett (Barbara) of Tucson, AZ and his wonderful family who survives her.

Nancy was the beloved granddaughter of Eva (Wedge) from Vermillion, OH and Robert James Hewett, of Gorleston, England who began his career with Standard Oil in Cleveland in 1895, and beloved granddaughter of Mae (Musgrave) & Ira Squire of Clyde, Ohio. Several years after his wife Mae passed away, Ira Squire married Mollie Ames Snyder. Nancy loved her “Mollie- Ma” and “Bampy”.

Nancy loved her only “cousins”, English twins, Ursula & Diana, and their beautiful families. The twins were sent by their Jewish family, in hopes to survive what was sure to be the German Occupation of England. Nancy’s aunt and uncle, Dorothy (Squire) and Al Neiman, sponsored the twins for the duration of WWII and until it was safe for their return to London.

Nancy’s family moved to Akron for a business opportunity. It was there, by chance, that Nancy met the love of her life, William Burdette Maxson, in 1946 at Buchtel High School. Bill’s parents, Laura (Shively) & Herbert Maxson, an aviator, journalist and Public Relations Director for B.F. Goodrich, lived in Akron.

Bill received an appointment to the US Naval Academy and Nancy went off to Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. The US Air Force offered the USNA Class of 1952 cadets a flying career with a Second Lieutenant commission at graduation. Forgoing her college senior year, Nancy & Bill married, July 12, 1952 in Lakewood, OH, launching Bill’s flying career and Nancy’s career as a military wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, roles she cherished!

Together with their children, Suzie and Bob, Nancy and Bill shared 35 moves across the United States and to the Philippines, facing many uncertainties, including the Vietnam War. With every assignment, life-long friendships blossomed. Throughout her lifetime Nancy proved true that “The road to a friend’s house is never long!

” Many dear friends named their daughters after her. Nancy loved her friends deeply and loved news about all their young families. She lived to see dear ones again.

After military retirement in 1984, Nancy enjoyed living in Alexandria, VA for several years as Bill consulted with aviation industries representing Cypress International. Appreciating the proximity of Eglin AFB, Nancy and Bill retired to the beautiful white sands of Destin, FL and the bayous of Freeport, FL which became home for 30 years! In 2011 dear USNA ‘52 classmates introduced Nancy & Bill to Fleet Landing, Atlantic Beach, FL, their final Home Sweet Home!

Nancy’s commitment to Air Force life and all who serve the Strategic Air Command mission to “Fly and Fight” never wavered. Her non-stop support for NAVY football lives on! “GO NAVY!

” As dear family, friends, and especially the USNA Class of ’52, mourned Bill’s passing in January 2013, we mourn and honor Nancy, whose style, independence, fun-loving spirit and devotion to those she loved, make her unforgettable! “The Beat Goes On! ” Nancy is survived by her beloved son, CAPT (ret NOAA) Robert William Maxson, Ph.D. (Mary Ellen) of Parkville, MO, and daughter, Suzanne Maxson Maltz, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
