Obituary for Nelda Shipp (Whitis) Mrs. Nelda Irene Whitis Shipp, age 73 of Mineola, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 in Tyler. She was born on February 20, 1945 in Brookhaven, Texas to the late Jessie Whitis and Marjorie Whitis. Brookhaven was a small rual community in Bell County that was taken in by Fort Hood in the early 1950’s She attended Belton Public Schools for twelve years and graduated in 1963.

She graduated from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor with teacher certification and earned a Masters Degree with numerous other certifications from Texas A&M – Commerce. After graduation from UMHB, she moved to Mineola to begin her teaching career. She taught for more than fifty years at Mineola High School.

She was a member of the P.E.D Club, a DECA Sponsor, FFA and FHA Advisor. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mineola where she taught Sunday School for many years. She spent many happy hours wathing the Mineola Yellow Jackets, Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Oscar Lynn Shipp. She is survived by her four brothers, Dillard Whitis of Temple, Howard Whitis of Belton, Jack Whitis of Salado and Bob Whitis of Belton; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of former students that she always referred to as “her children”. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Beaty Funeral Home 5396 S. State Hwy.

37 Mineola, TX 75773. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church 204 N. Johnson St. Mineola, Texas 75773 at 11:00 am, Rev. Bobby Tucker conducting.

Brant Lee, Corey Hammond, Lee Simms, Todd Karch, Glen Dossett, Jonathan Rodieck will serve as pallbearers. Interment will be at Far North Belton Cemetery 3110 N. Main st. Belton, Texas 76513 at 11:00 am Saturday, July 7, 2018.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Fondation or the Lynn and Nelda Whitis Shipp Endowed Scholarship fund at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.
