Williamsport, MD – Nellie Mae Payne, 86, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Homewood Retirement Center Williamsport, MD. She was born on December 13, 1932 in Shanktown, MD to the late Joseph Emanuel Sr. and Lenora Irene Young Morgan. Nellie was a 1950 graduate of Williamsport High School Williamsport, MD.

She was active in Sports and was a part of the Maryland State Basketball Championship Team. She was employed by Allegany Energy of Hagerstown, MD for 38 years until retiring in 1990. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Williamsport, MD.

She was formerly a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church where she served on various committees, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Curves. Nellie was a past member of the Garden Club at Potomac Edison and Four Runners of Potomac Edison.

She enjoyed traveling, cruising, reading, and boating. She is survived by her husband Charles G. “Griff” Payne whom she married on June 18, 1955; niece Paula Slack of Williamsport, MD; nephew Paul Allen French and his wife Jona of Warfordsburg, PA; great nephew Brandon Lerch of Hagerstown, MD; close friend Dorothy Williams. She was predeceased by two sisters Norma Staubs and Arletta French and two brothers Joseph Morgan, Jr. and David Morgan.

Funeral services will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Williamsport, MD on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 11:00 am with Pastor Kim Nunberg officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Monday from 10:00-11:00 am. Burial will be private.
