Nicholas Masterson, 90, of Greensburg, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, in Redstone Highlands, Greensburg. He was born Aug.

2, 1928, and lived most of his life in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh (Dormont, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon), and more recently Greensburg. He was married to Mary (Gianotsos) Masterson for 64 years.

He joined the Army upon graduation from South Hills High School in 1946. He served in the Army bands in the U.S., and in Europe as a member of the U.S. Army of Occupation. Nick attended the Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C.

He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with high honors. He served on the Dormont Borough Council for 20 years (16 as president) and the Planning Commission of Upper St. Clair Township, as well as chairman of the Greek Classroom Committee at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a longtime member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, Mt.

Lebanon and most recently of St. Michael’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, Greensburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Argiro (Katsifarakis) Mastroakis; and his siblings, John Mastorakis, Ann Petousis and Frank Mastorakis. In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Dr. Peter N. Masterson and wife, Teresa, a dentist in Sarasota, Fla.

, and Dr. James N. Masterson and wife, Carrie, a physician in Greensburg. He also leaves seven talented grandchildren, Cole, Carlie, Bianca, Lexi, Marina, Sophia and Gina Masterson; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Masonic organizations: Blue Lodge and Syria Shrine.

He was a lifetime member of the Pitt Alumni Association. Nick was employed by the Westinghouse Electric Corp. as the manager of administration at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory.

As such, he oversaw the purchasing, finance and legal facilities, and general administrative functions of the laboratory. He worked at the laboratory for 30 years. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he negotiated the contract with the government for operation of the laboratory.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1182 Ashland St., South Greensburg. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the church with Archpriest John Nosal officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park, Jefferson Hills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Organ Recovery and Education, 204 Sigma Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15238. The family would like to acknowledge “Julie,” who donated a kidney to Nick, giving him an additional 18 years to enjoy life. www.
