Nolan Christopher Gerwels, 14, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. He was born on October 12, 2003 to Kevin C. and Margaret A. Gerwels, both of whom survive. Nolan is survived by his loving parents; three sisters, Nadalyn, Nia, and Neriah; brother, Nathaniel; maternal grandparents, Timothy and Kathryn Burzynski of Milwaukee, WI; and paternal grandfather, Charles Gerwels of Menomonee Falls, WI.
Nolan was preceded in death by his sister, Nerissa Gerwels on November 24, 2017, as well as his paternal grandmother, Janice Huth. Nolan was an honor student at Discovery Middle School, having completed eighth grade. He was first chair percussionist with Discovery Honors Band.
He loved sports; he played baseball with Harris Storm as well as basketball with Discovery Middle School and with Tipping Point, where he played point guard. He also ran cross country and track and field—preferring high jump. He had just finished summer conditioning with Marian High School basketball team and was optimistic about having a spot on the freshman team this coming fall.
Nolan was a kind, caring person who valued hard work, fairness, and loyalty. In every aspect of his life, Nolan gave one hundred percent. He was dedicated to everything he did, whether it was his school work, practicing for a band concert, learning a new play, or perfecting his shot.
Nolan never did anything halfway. He gave everything and everyone one hundred percent of himself. Nolan was always willing to help anyone—he even spent the last three years as assistant coach for his little sister’s upward basketball team.
He was just an all-around great kid and nice guy. He is loved dearly by his family and friends, being especially close to all of his siblings. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Friday, June 29, 2018 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN.
