Nora “Eleanor” Pawlowski Sabol, 99, of Greensburg, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, surrounded by her family in Weatherwood Manor. She was born Feb.
20, 1919, in Braddock, a daughter of the late John and Frances Kanakowski Pawlowski. In 1943, she married Joseph J. Sabol of Murrysville, who preceded her in death in 2004. To say that Eleanor was a devoted wife and mother hardly begins to describe her life.
She gave birth to four daughters and four sons: Frances (Dr. Alvin Sheffler), Raymond (Beverly), Darlene (the late Anthony Altieri), Ronald (Janet), Denise (William Hillman), Dennis (Aurelia), Donald (Margery) and Donna (Michael McGrew). With those roots, she took joy in having 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She truly lived her life working and caring for her family in ways that are almost unheard of today.
While raising her eight children, she washed diapers and, for 16 straight years, made baby formula by hand, packed lunches, cooked excellent meals, washed and ironed clothes, nursed the sick, all while giving precious little time to herself. In addition to her eight children, she fostered newborn babies before they were placed into their permanent homes. Back in the late ’50s and ’60s, she enjoyed watching Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” with her daughters when they got home from school.
She was a great polka dancer and, as her husband always said, “had a great pair of legs! ” Her laugh, her stories and simply the sound of her voice will be missed by all her family and those who knew her. In fact, we miss her already and we look forward to seeing her again.
The good Lord must certainly have greeted her with arms wide open. She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Jonathan Sabol; and son-in-law, Anthony D. Altieri; in addition to seven brothers and sisters. In addition to her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, she is survived by two sisters, Margaret Petrick and Teresa Dranusky.
