Norman Lewis McDonald, 92, formerly of Kellogg, died on Friday, June 22, 2018, at Village Place Retirement in Marion. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the Union Community Church in Union. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Memorials to the Iowa State Fair or the Union Community Church may be left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service. Norman, the son of Wilbur and Ethel (Norman) McDonald, was born on September 25, 1925 in Maxwell, Iowa. He lived most of his life in the Central Iowa area.

Norman graduated from Liberty Township Schools in Marshall County in 1944. He then served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Korea. On August 15, 1950, Norman was united in marriage with Dorothy Marshall in Bangor.

After they were married Norman worked as a farmer and then later a salesman for BF Goodrich Tires. He then sold silos and buildings before returning to farming. After retirement, he continued working as a truck driver.

Norman was a member of the Kellogg American Legion and the Center Friends Church in Newton. He enjoyed spending the last several winters in Mesa, Arizona where he attended the Desert Chapel. While in Arizona he loved hiking, playing dominos, shuffleboard, and cards with his family that also lived there and his friends.

Norman was a 20-year information volunteer at the Iowa State Fair. He was always known to tell a good story and you could be sure to hear him jokingly tell people that you “never let the truth get in the way of a good story”. Norman is survived by his children, Marie (Wayne) DaBelko of Cortland, Ohio, Norman (Carol) McDonald of Ames, Gary (Sharry) McDonald of Kellogg, David (Julie) McDonald of Hilliard, Ohio, and Dan (Chris) McDonald of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Eric (Oliva) McDonald, Brian McDonald, Zoey McDonald, Gavin McDonald, Samantha Solis, Rachael Griffith, Adam Griffith, and Annie Nelson; his siblings, Wayne McDonald, Erma Haywood, Lloyd (Martha) McDonald, Keith (Ruth) McDonald, Willard (Terri) McDonald, Joe (Joyce) McDonald, Dwight (Cindi) McDonald, and Duane (Vicki) McDonald; sister-in-law, Ardis Caster; and his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Mary McDonald; and wife, Dorothy McDonald in 2003.
