Obituary for Oiva Bakkenta Oiva Bakkenta, 90, of Big Falls, MN, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the Rainy Lake Medical Center in International Falls, MN. Oiva was born on December 9, 1927 in Waconia, MN to Charles and Ida Bakkenta. He attended school in Big Falls.

Oiva’s father was a logger and his family moved throughout Minnesota, including Lindford, Littlefork, Waconia, Margie, until moving to Big Falls in the 1960s. He worked on the Northern Pacific Railroad and was also a logger, and a farmer. He was considered to be among the last of the “lumberjacks”.

Oiva enjoyed wood-carving ducks, decoys, and birds among many other things. He enjoyed going to flea markets and buying and selling antiques. He was self-taught to play the violin and accordion.

Oiva was a member of the River of God Full Gospel Church in Big Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Arnold, Erick, Karlo, Toivo, Arvo, Reino, and Wayne; sisters, Hilmi, and Ellen. Oiva is survived by his sister-in-law, Lorraine Fanning; several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the River of God Full Gospel Church on Friday August 3, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will be at Margie Cemetery in Margie, MN. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Oiva Bakkenta please visit our Sympathy Store.
