Pastor Dorothy’s Obituary Dorothy Mae Jenkins Lurry known as “The Potatoes Chip Lady “, she was born to Willie J. Jenkins and Lucille Carter Jenkins. On May 21, 1925 in Cairo, Ga. She received her basic education at Pump Hery School in Calvin, Ga.
On Dec 25, 1948, she married Herbert Lorry, Jr. in Cairo, Ga to this union nine children was born two girls and seven sons. She was preceded death by her loving husband, Herbert Lurry, Sons: K.C. Lurry, Kenneth O’Hara Lurry, Herman Lurry and the twins they all welcome her in Heaven on Feb 26, 2019. Dorothy Lurry was married to her husband for 43 years before God called him home.
She was self-employed with her husband for many years before moving to Fort Pierce, Florida she gave her life to Christ at early age in 1962 under the leadership of John Ira Davis. She joined Faith Temple COGIC in Cairo, Ga. After moving to Fort Pierce, Florida, she joined COGIC #2.
She served in the Fort Pierce District. She was known for her love of directing youth choir with amazing songs she wrote her favorite songs. After Pastor Herbert Lurry and Co-Pastor Jerry Isham passed away she remained faithful servant of God in her district and walked in her calling pastoring for 26 years under the late Supt Clarence Brown.
After his passing she became pastoring under Supt Anton Manley. She was a pioneer and leading the way for pastoral women under COGIC. She loved cooking for her grandkids giving each of them a nickname, her smile and laughter always had the power to light up a room.
In any circumstance, she always had positive feedback and unshakeable faith. Her favorite song was “God Got a Hook in Me” and I would wonder to myself ” WHEN DID MOM AND GOD GO FIISHING? ” She leaves behind to carry her legacy Daughters: Virginia (Morris) Steward, Sr. and Mary Alice (Albert) Byrd, Sr. Sons: Howard (Betty) Lurry and Leroy (Carolyn) Lurry all of Fort Pierce, Florida, Grandsons: Kenneth ( Latrail) Lurry of St Petersburg, Fl.
, Henry ( Tasha) Stevens, Walter Campbell, III, Herbert Campbell, Sr., Morris ( Lashika) Stewart of Orlando, FL, Joel Smith, Howard Lurry, Jr., LaMontez Lurry, Sr., Andrell Lurry, Albert Byrd Jr., Christopher Marlo, Emmanuel Lurry, Cedrick Works, Granddaughters: Melane Byrd ( Antonia), Murine Stewart, Marica (Jason) Palmer, Farthea Lurry, Shonna Work, Lakeisha Andrews and Shameka Lurry. Sisters: Johnnie Mae Washington, of Cliamay, Ga. , Rayford and Pearlie Huntly, Mary and James Andrews, A special niece: Mildred Pease all of Tallahassee, Florida, Brother-n-law: Nathaniel Cherry, Sister-n-laws: Eunice Reddick of Thomasville, Ga.
and Bernice Grant of Pawley Island, SC. , Best-Friends: Mary Ramsey, Virginia Conatser and Celestine Edwards . A host of other relatives and friends that will miss dearly.
