Family will greet visitors starting at 6:00 pm Thursday, March 14, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a rosary/vigil will begin at 7:00 pm. Patty Marie Sebastian was born August 15, 1941, to Joseph and Eugenia (Deibert) Sebastian at the hospital in Beulah, ND.
She was raised on a farm located 11 miles south of Beulah and attended a one-room county school house located one mile from the farm thru the eighth grade (her mother also attended that same school). She graduated from Beulah High School in 1959 and left for Bismarck right after that. Patty was very active in 4-H while living on the farm and then became a leader of the Bismarck Juniors 4-H club for nine years in Bismarck.
She became an experienced seamstress from sewing she did while in 4-H. Designing wedding dresses were such a joy to do, the final one was for her daughter, Cindee. Later, costume designing and sewing for Dakota Stage, Living Stations, and Capitol City Cloggers took a lot of time.
Patty married Ernest Jesse Vollan at St. Benedict Catholic Church, south of Beulah, ND, on September 5, 1960, and their daughter, Cynthia “Cindee” was born July 6, 1961, at Bismarck. In 1980 Patty was introduced to clogging by Irene Roth and in 1983 Patty started the Capital City Cloggers in Bismarck with five square dancers. Clogging lessons were started and featured every year for new cloggers.
This was the first clogging club in North Dakota at that time, until July 14, 2012, when the club performed for the last time at the Regan Centennial, then was retired. Patty continued clogging with the Rock’N Cloggers in Bismarck. Patty enjoyed community theatre and was active with Dakota Stage Ltd from around 1983 working many different areas including on the Board.
She also performed the Drama at Ft. Lincoln for eight years as a singer. Patty loved to sing and started at St. Benedict Church, Beulah, then St. Anne’s, Bismarck, and St. Mary’s for many years.
Another love she had was creating and directing the Living Stations at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 14 years with Ernie portraying Jesus for eight years. Many friends of different faiths were in the cast each year, never said NO to Patty. In 1990 she directed the Lenten drama, “Pilate, the Unconcerned Man,” using cast members again of different faiths.
In 1993 these two special creations were combined to create the last hours of Christs’ life. 2001 was the 14th and final year for this wonderful creation. Patty was employed by the ND State Electrical Board from 1967 until June 1999.
After reaching retirement that left lots of time for whatever Patty wanted to do. Landscaping and gardening at their home was an important item, along with the Garden Club projects. Patty is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ernest, Bismarck; daughter, Cindee (Frank) Nickel, Grand Island, NE; granddaughters, Heather (Kelly) Burgess, Dannebrog, NE, and Christa Nickel, Salt Lake City, UT; great-grandsons, Corbin and Conner Burgess, Dannebrog, NE; niece, Eugenia Boespflug, Bismarck; and stepsister, Bertie Koch, Mandan.
Patty was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph Jr. and Neil Sebastian; and her parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Grade School, Bismarck.
