Obituary for Paul Christian Smith II Paul Christian Smith II, surrounded by family, said goodbye to this side of life at the age of 94 on April 8, 2018. He started life in Chicago, July 1923, and remained there until he moved to Fort Collins to study Forestry at Colorado A&M in 1941. WWII interrupted his schooling, and he spent 3 years in the European Theater as an Army Forward Observer.

After his discharge he finished his Bachelors and Masters degrees at A&M. He took his first job in Maryland where he met and married Katherine Anderson in 1950. They moved to Rhinelander, Wisconsin a short time later where he cruised timber for Consolidated Paper.

Paul loved skiing, and was instrumental in establishing a ski hill in Rhinelander that his growing family enjoyed yearly. In 1965 he pursued his PhD at the University of Minnesota and in 1971 moved his family to Eureka, California where he worked 16 years as an extension forester for UC Berkeley. He had always wanted to return to Colorado, so he and Katherine made Fort Collins their final home when he retired in 1987.

Paul was a conservationist, amateur photographer, civil war buff, and model train enthusiast. He and Katherine raised 3 children during their 63 years together. “Stick with me, Kid, and I’ll show you the world”, he had promised Katherine.

And he did. They were able to revisit their honeymoon destination and favorite vacation spot, Bermuda, 20 times and managed to visit every continent before giving up travel in their 80s. Paul was preceded in death by Katherine in 2013.

He is survived by Paul C. Smith, Jr. (Annie) of Circle Pines, MN, Candace Leber (Donn) of Fort Collins, Carol Myers (Dan) of Fort Collins, 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at Allnutt Funeral Service in Ft. Collins with a reception to follow.
