Obituary for Paul E. Chitwood, Jr. Paul E. Chitwood, Jr. was a retired Asst. Principal at Durrett High School and prior to that worked as a chemist at Frankfort Distilleries. He was born in Louisville and graduated from Male High School.

Paul obtained B. S. (Biology) and M. A. (Education) degrees from Western Kentucky University. During the Second World War, from 1942-45, he served with distinction as a Medic with the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division of the U. S. Army, seeing intense action in France, Belgium, and Germany and was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery and a Purple Heart. He was a faithful member of St. Matthews Methodist Church since 1940.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine S. Chitwood, whom he married in 1942. Since his retirement in 1980, he has enjoyed many cruises and much travel both at home and abroad. He was an avid bridge player, playing up until age 96.

Throughout his life, his family remained his focus and he served as a true inspiration to all who knew him. He is survived by two sons–Paul E. (Tad) Chitwood III and Joseph Brian Chitwood (Sally), two grandchildren, Nick Chitwood (Lauren), Rachel Riney (Chris); three great-grandchildren, Penelope, Charlie and Channing Chitwood (plus one on the way, baby Riney. Visitation will be 5p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at Ratterman’s Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd.
