Obituary for Paul E. Doll Paul Edwin Doll, March 21, 1932 – October 13, 2018. Paul was one of seven children born to Paul Richard Doll and Emma Doll in 1932, near Custer, South Dakota. From an early age, he worked in the forestry industry, as well as giving joy to the community by helping to run the local movie theater.
He graduated from Custer High School in 1951, and then he entered the army. He is a combat veteran from the Korean War, where he served as a surveyor in the artillery and infantry divisions, achieving the rank of corporal. After leaving the military, he worked in the road construction and ranching industries in the region, finally settling in Cheyenne, Wyoming around 1972.
He continued to live in Cheyenne, working in construction and rock quarrying, until his first retirement in 1999. He then worked part time in the industry until 2008. His coworkers appreciated his humorous storytelling ability and style.
He enjoyed working with this hands, creating or repairing all manner of tools, toys, cars, sheds, trailers and anything else that needed attention. In his later years, he enjoyed the challenges of Sudoku and Solitaire. He always had a logical mind for solving problems in creative and inventive ways.
Paul respected nature and enjoyed the outdoors. In his leisure time, he most enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, hauling firewood and simply being up in the mountains with others. He was often accompanied by his four-legged canine friend, Sammy.
He treated the forests, streams and mountains as valued res. Many of his most interesting and fun adventures were times when he was “up in the woods,” as he would say. Paul was unconventional in many ways, but he was a positive force in the neighborhoods in which he lived.
He could often be found plowing snow, digging drainage ditches, grading the roads or felling trees. He used his ingenuity and abilities to help others. There are many examples, such as pulling stuck vehicles from snow drifts following a heavy snow, helping a neighbor to recover when their basement flooded or keeping an eye on properties when owners were out of town.
These acts of kindness were common place for Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Doll, and sister, Mary Lindy. He is survived by a spouse of 51 years, Shirley, two sons, Anthony and Kenneth (Catherine), and two granddaughters, Shelby and Amberly.
He is also survived by three sisters, Helen Weyrich (Paul), Shirley Davidson and Bertha Johnson, and one brother, David Doll (Carrie), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed Visitation will be Friday and Saturday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel. A service will be held at The Christ Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 20th with a luncheon reception to follow at 3:30pm, at the Little America Hotel.
