Obituary for Paulette L. “Polly” Riggs Paulette L. “Polly” Riggs, 76, of York, died peacefully at home, Monday, December 10, 2018. Born in Waynesburg, she was the daughter of Paul K. Phillips of Burghill, OH and the late Eleanor (Headlee) Phillips. Polly was the loving wife of John M. Riggs.

Her first husband was the late Ralph E. Oerman who died in 2003. Polly was a 1964 graduate of Penn State University, receiving her B.A. in secondary education. While at PSU, she was a viral lab technician.

She enjoyed a career as a teacher all over the United States, with some of her fondest memories teaching junior high in New Orleans, LA, Pompton, NJ, and Midland, TX. Polly was also a certified dental assistant. Polly was a very active member of Living Word Community Church.

She took part in Growth Groups, Singles Groups, Seniors Group, Car Care Helps, and Grief Share. It was while leading Grief Share after the loss of her first husband, that she met her loving husband, John. Polly had a deep love for the Lord, and in the words of her family “she always had a beautiful sustaining heart for the Lord and His will”.

Polly was very artistic. She enjoyed wood carving, wood burning, knitting, adult coloring, and scrapbooking. Polly loved to be in the outdoors, whether gardening, horseback riding, bass fishing, bird hunting, or boating, being in nature was her retreat.

She was a member of the Fostoria Glass Society of America, and loved to collect Fostoria glassware. Polly loved to spend time with family and friends. In addition to her father and her loving husband John, she is survived by her sisters, E. Carol Davies of Azle, TX and Bonnie L. Jackson and her husband, Patrick of Albuquerque, NM; her brother, Arthur Paul Phillips of Girard, OH, and her extended family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of Polly’s life will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Living Word Community Church, 2530 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion. The service will be held in the church’s Life Center. Interment in Shiloh Union Cemetery will follow a luncheon at the church.

The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and also at the luncheon following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in Polly’s memory be made to Living Word Community Church, 2530 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, PA 17356 (please write “mission fund” in check memo). Arrangements by the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 East Market Street, York, PA 17403.
