Paul Baumgartner passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at the age of 94. He was born on February 22, 1924 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the late Della (Saurer) and Dewey A. Baumgartner. Paul grew up on the family farm near Bluffton, Indiana.

He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII and then received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. Paul married his wife of 65 years, Joan Huffman, on July 5, 1953. He began his career with the California Highway Department in Eureka, CA before moving to Michigan in 1954 where he was employed by the Michigan Department of Transportation, eventually retiring after 30 years of service as the Saginaw District Soils Engineer in 1985.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Saginaw and in the Saginaw community, volunteering with St. Luke’s Hospital (Covenant) and delivering blood for the Michigan Red Cross. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the world. In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by two sons, Richard Baumgartner (Ann Pierce) and Dean Baumgartner (Becky Stevens); three grandchildren, Sarah (Norman) Bishara, Scott (Nicole) Baumgartner, and Amy Baumgartner; two great-grandchildren, Grace Baumgartner and Eleanor Bishara; a brother, Garl Baumgartner; a sister, Janice Augsburger; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Harold Baumgartner. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 4790 Gratiot, Saginaw. Reverend Amy Terhune will officiate.

Burial will be in Bluffton, Indiana on Saturday, January 26. Friends may visit with family at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Monday and then at the church from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the funeral service.
