Poland – Philip A. Smaldino, 94, of Poland, died Friday morning, April 27, 2018 at Masternick Memorial. Phil was born November 8, 1923 in Youngstown, to his parents who immigrated from Italy, Angelo and Angelina Papparella Smaldino. A graduate of East High School, Phil was drafted into the military.

After being honorably discharged, Phil took advantage of the G.I. Bill of Rights and attended Youngstown State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Phil was vice president of Tri County Distributing, a beer and wine wholesaler and later retired as president of Anchor Cigar and Candy Company. Phil embodied the American dream, working long hours, treating his customers well, and overseeing the growing success of his business.

When asked what he liked best about his job, Phil was quoted as saying, ” I enjoy running my own show”. Phil was a long time member of the Liberty Girard Rotary Club and for many years served on the Teamster Health and Welfare Board. He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church.

Some of Phil’s favorite things were a good game of golf, a gin and tonic and a great cigar. He and his wife Pat enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States and the world, appreciating the riches that other cultures had to offer. More than life itself, Phil valued his time with his family, especially his one and only granddaughter, Sydney.

Phil’s wife of 52 years, Pat Garland preceded him in death. Phil leaves his son, Dr. Brian Smaldino of Poland; one granddaughter, Sydney Smaldino; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul and Frank Smaldino, and Angelo and Joseph DeNicholas.

A prayer service will be held Tuesday, 12:15 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Edward Catholic Church at 1:00 p.m. with the Very Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin officiating.

Following the Mass a luncheon celebrating Phil’s life will take place at The Lake Club. Phil will be interred at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown. Phil’s family will receive friends Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
