Obituary for RADM Wycliffe David Toole Jr, USN Rear Admiral Wycliffe David Toole, Jr, USN (Retired), 91 passed away peacefully among family, on Saturday, November 24. He was born in Augusta, Georgia on March 14, 1927. RADM Toole lived a fast-paced and exciting life.
He enlisted in the US Navy and was called to active duty on July 1, 1944 with the Navy’s V-12 unit. He received his commission as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve at the University of North Carolina 1946. He studied at the University of South Carolina, NC, and received his BS from the University of Maryland in 1955.
He graduated from the Naval War College in 1967, and received his MS in International Affairs from George Washington University. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Intelligence School in 1948, he entered the Naval Flight Training Program and received his wings in 1951. He flew patrol squadrons all around the world including the Middle East, finally joining the Airborne Early Warning Squadron, the Navy’s “Hurricane Hunters”.
His subsequent commands in Iceland and Southeast Asia received awards of merit from the Armed Services. As Commanding Officer of the USS Iwo Jima, RADM Toole was presented the Bronze Star Medal, and as a Flag Officer in command of the 7th Fleet Amphibious Forces he received the Legion of Merit for directing combat operations off the coast of North Vietnam. RADM Toole held three commands simultaneously in the United States–Commander of the Philadelphia Naval Base, Commandant of the Naval Districts in Philadelphia, New York and Boston.
Among his other awards, RADM Toole had two legions of Merit and the Order of the Cloud and Banner from the Republic of China. RADM Toole was also known as an author of a mystery novel, several published articles on military affairs, and as the short story master suspense-builder of Alfred Hitchcock and Mike Shayne’s Mystery Magazines. He retired in 1977 to Melrose, Florida where he enjoyed gardening, reading, tennis, and golf.
Wycliffe is survived by Patricia D. Toole, his loving and supportive wife of more than 46 years; their children Debra Fromang (David), Davi Toole, Dana Franks (Roy), and Patrick W. Toole; five grandchildren (Richard, Vickie, Sean David, Raymond Wycliffe, Davis); one great-grandson; and sister, Betty Clavier. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sun. , Jan.
