Ralph Mathers Sloman March 22, 1929 – May 27, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Ralph Mathers Sloman, 90 of Taylorville, died at 11:09 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2019 in his home. Mr. Sloman was born on March 22, 1929 in Springfield, the son of George and Jennie (Mathers) Sloman. After graduating Morrisonville Community High School, he earned his degree in Agriculture at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1951.

He then went on to serve his country proudly in the Unites States Air Force achieving the rank of Staff Sargent. He married Eva “Beth” Monroe on July 9, 1954, and she preceded him in death on March 12, 2011. Mr. Sloman enjoyed his life as a farmer, retiring after 39 years from the fields of Christian County.

He was a member of Zenobia Baptist Church for over 50 years, and later Bethel Baptist Church where he helped with Sunday School. He served as King Township Trustee, Morrisonville High School Board, the Morrisonville-Palmer Fire District Board, was a Lifetime member of the American Legion, and served 40+ years on the U of I Extension Council & building Board. Mr. Sloman loved being present in his community and helping others, and he will be dearly missed by many.

Mr. Sloman is survived by several nieces and nephews: Maude Higgins (Duane) of Wichita, KS; John Sloman (Rita) of Bowling Green, KY; Rachel Anne Broughton (Perry) of Pawnee, IL; Vicki McMillian (Joe) of Galloway Township, NJ; Carol Fontenot (Dave) of Sulpher, LA; Ray Pryne of Iowa Park, TX; one sister-in-law: Paula Pryne of Galloway Township, NJ; and one very special “adopted daughter”, Patty Taglioli, who cared for him like he was her father. Along with his wife Eva Elizabeth “Beth”, Mr. Sloman was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Dawn Ilene Sloman on January 4, 1982, and one brother and sister-in-law: Wheeler & Catherine Sloman. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Bethel Baptist Church, 1919 N 1000 East Road, Taylorville, with Pastor Steve Robinson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 until the time of service at the church. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service, also in the church. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Morrisonville Cemetery, with military honors.

The family suggests memorials to: Bethel Baptist Church. McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
