He was born on December 16, 1932 in La Coste, Texas. Raul graduated from La Coste High School and earned an Associate Degree from St. Phillips College in San Antonio.
Raul joined the United States Air Force in 1952 at the age of 19. He served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his honorable service career, he earned the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Double Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Four Knots, Occupational Medal Ribbon – Germany, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award with Four Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Martinez retired from the Air Force on September 1, 1972 at Randolph Air Force Base. He began a second career in the Civil Service, working at both Kelly and Lackland Air Force Bases, retiring after 20 years on January 3, 1995. Raul was blessed with two devoted sons, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernadino and Felipa Martinez; his brother, Juan Martinez, and his sisters, Jesusita Martinez and Eva Martinez. He is survived by his sons, Raul Martinez, Jr. of San Antonio and Edward J. Martinez and his wife, Regina of Kempner; grandchildren, Kourtney Martinez, Cody Martinez, Meghan Martinez, Gabby Martinez, and Tori Martinez; and great-grandchildren, Jason Martinez and Alaina Martinez. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville, Texas, with the Holy Rosary recited that evening at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in La Coste, Texas.
Interment with full military honors will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
