Airman First Class Raymond Anderson Matthaei USAF, age 27, of Crestview, Florida passed away Monday, January 7, 2019. He was born July 26, 1991 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to Lisa and Raymond Matthaei. Raymond was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Majorie and Raymond G. Matthaei, his maternal grandparents John and Gertrude Rothenberger, and his aunt Marjorie Matthaei Tapia.

Raymond graduated from Western Harnett High School with the class of 2009 and went on to receive… an Associate’s Degree from Sandhills Community College. He pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte until enlisting in the United States Air Force in October of 2017. Raymond married his wife Rebecca in October of 2017 and they welcomed their son Raymond Ian Matthaei into the world on March 5, 2018.

Raymond loved to make people laugh by telling humorous stories and his sense of humor would brighten everyone’s day. He had a knack for fixing anything mechanical. Raymond had a keen interest in current events and politics, always cherishing a healthy debate.

His hobbies included playing golf, spending time with friends, cars, and listening to music. He was a charming man who was known for his loyalty. Raymond will be remembered as a sentimental man who loved his family and was full of spirit.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Matthaei of Crestview, Florida, who is with child; his son Raymond Ian Matthaei; his parents Lisa and Raymond Matthaei of Southern Pines, NC; his sister Vanessa Burgess and husband Andrew of Lillington, NC; his nephew Waylon Burgess; his aunt Catherine Gismondi and husband Neil of West Milford, NJ; cousin Nicole Salomone; aunt Elizabeth Matthaei and cousin Daniel Matthaei of Fair Lawn, NJ; Uncle Michael Matthaei, and wife Danielle, and cousins Jessica Matthaei, Michael Matthaei Jr. of Totowa, NJ; aunt Julie and cousins Caroline and James Blumenfeld, of New City, NY; and cousin Christine Tapia of New York. The family will receive friends from 4-6PM on Wednesday January 16 at Miller-Boles Funeral Home 1150 Fire Tower Road in Sanford, NC. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 6PM in the Miller-Boles Chapel with Pastor Martha Nilsen officiating.
