OBITUARY Reese Martin Massey Jr. April 8, 1932 – July 13, 2018 Play Tribute Movie CHAPIN – Rev. Reese M. Massey, Jr., (b. 4/8/32-Rock Hill, SC) was the son of Reese M. Massey, Sr., and Katherine H. Massey.

A graduate of Rock Hill High School and Wofford College and Candler School of Theology at Emory University, he was in the insurance business in Rock Hill from 1959 until 1962 and active in the Rock Hill Jaycees, Breakfast Optimist Club, Toastmasters International, The Kiwanis Club, and taught Sunday School class at St. John’s United Methodist Church. In 1966, Rev. Massey entered the Chaplain Service of the U. S. Air Force where he served until 1975.

A veteran of the Vietnam conflict, Rev. Massey also served in the U. S. Air Force as an enlisted member during the Korean conflict. Following his military service Rev.

Massey continued his education in Clinical Pastoral Education at The Earle E. Morris, Jr. Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Center in Columbia, S.C., later becoming a Chaplain with the Veterans Administration, serving two hospitals—the Canandaigua NY Veterans Administration Hospital as Chaplain, and, later, the Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN, as the Chief of Chaplain Service. Rev. Massey was awarded three Air Force Commendation medals for his service to Air Force personnel.

He was a member of the American Legion and a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans. In 1987 Rev. Massey became a Chaplain with the SC Department of Mental Health.

He served several appointments in the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Rev. Massey is survived by his wife, Daisy G. Massey; children, Kory (Stephen) Cole of Canandaigua, NY, Julie (Stephen) Hays of Maryville, TN, and R. Martin (Greta) Massey, III, of Roswell, GA; and stepchildren, Robert (Chris) Power of Cayce, SC, and Margaret Power (Marshall New) of Lexington, SC.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Smith Massey. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Salem United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends beginning at 3:00 p.m. prior the service at the church. Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2018 in Ebenezer Presbyterian Church cemetery in Rock Hill, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Wofford College, Office of Development, 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303-3663 or Salem United Methodist Church, PO Box 237, Ballentine, SC 29002.
