Obituary for Rev. Ernest W.P. Thayil Ernest Thayil 1931 – 2019 Ernest William Paul Thayil, of New Market, MD, died on January 4, 2019. Ernie who was 87, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Savior, surrounded by his family at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, after suffering a stroke on December 27, 2018.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Hyacinth Krishnan, and her husband Unikorassan Krishnan; two brothers, Lionel Thayil, Ronald Thayil, and his wife Sandra Thayil; daughter-in-law Dominique Thayil; and granddaughter Athena Thayil. Ernie was born in Bombay, India on November 17, 1931 to John Frederick Shem Thayil, and Daisy Agnes Thyle. He attended Don Bosco High School and loved spending time with his brothers, sisters, and friends while growing up in Bombay.
He attended and graduated from Union Biblical Seminary in 1954 in order to pursue his dream of becoming a missionary. He became the Director of Bombay Youth for Christ in 1956, just after marrying Margaret Mary Elisha on February 1, 1956. Ernie left for the United States of America to pursue higher education on November 7, 1957, just 8 months after their first daughter, Kathleen Mary was born.
He arrived in New York on December 5, 1957 after a long arduous journey on a cargo ship. He arrived in the USA with $14 and a bus ticket to Seattle. He made his way cross country to attend Seattle Pacific College, after a chance meeting with the college President in Bombay.
Ernie valued education above all else besides God and family, and started attending college while also working to save enough money to bring Margaret and Kathleen from India to join him in Seattle. Through the help of his church, and many friends, he was able to bring Margaret and Kathleen over just one year after he arrived. He received a Bachelor’s in Business & Economics from Seattle Pacific College in 1962.
While still a student there in 1960, Ernie founded Operation Outreach at Seattle Pacific College, which was a short-term summer mission trip for students. That program still exists today for students at Seattle Pacific University. He then moved the family to Eugene, Oregon where he attended the University of Oregon and also welcomed their second daughter, Amy Daisy.
While working numerous jobs, he managed to graduate from the University of Oregon with a MBA in 1966. His education took him and the family back to Seattle in 1966 where he was hired by Boeing as a Systems Analyst and Sales Representative; his first full time career position. While in Seattle, they welcomed two sons, Jonathan Ernest, and Jason Christopher.
In 1970, Ernie took a position with Seattle Public Schools, as a Special Assistant to the District Superintendent, in charge of Planning, Research, and Evaluation. His main focus was to work on desegregating public schools in Seattle. When his boss was named the new Superintendent of Baltimore City Public Schools, he asked Ernie to come with him.
In 1971, Ernie and the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he would serve as the Special Assistant to the Superintendent. Drawing from his experience, he was tasked with desegregating Baltimore City Public Schools and instituted a busing plan to accomplish this in a difficult transition time for the city. He received a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Maryland in 1974.
He continued at the University of Maryland pursuing his PhD in Education, finishing all but his dissertation. Ernie served Baltimore City Public Schools for 23 years, serving most of that time as a principal at different levels. His work ethic was unmatched, accumulating over 200 sick days at his retirement in 1993.
Never one to sit still for very long, Ernie decided to continue to pursue his lifelong dream to serve God; after serving as a Lay Leader for most of his life. He was ordained in 1996 as a Deacon in the United Methodist Church after obtaining a Master’s degree in Divinity; his third graduate degree. He was ordained as an Elder in 1999, and went on to serve a number of churches in the Baltimore Washington Conference, including: Mt.
Zion UMC, Deerfield, UMC, Prospect UMC, Marvin Chapel UMC, Pleasant Grove UMC, Catoctin UMC, Johnsville UMC, and Bethesda Sykesville UMC. Ernie loved reading, taking walks when he was able, an annual beach trip to Ocean City, MD with family and friends, and caring for his congregation at all the churches he had the privilege of serving. He especially loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending as much time as he could with them.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Margaret, four children Kathleen Thayil, Amy Bartholomee and her husband Wayne, Jonathan Thayil, and Jason Thayil. Seven grandchildren and one great grandaughter, Brenden Riley, Allyson Gilberto, and her husband Anthony; Stacy Bartholomee, and her daughter Ava, Julian Bartholomee, and Philippe Bartholomee; Emma Thayil, and Kelman Thayil. Siblings Boniface Thayil and his wife Dolores; brother Edward Thayil; brother Allan Thayil and his wife Kathryn; sister Cynthia Marrott, and her husband Sadanand; and numerous nieces and nephews.
