Richard’s Obituary Richard Harold R.H. “Red” Bond, 99, of Dyersburg, TN, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Harborview of Dyersburg. He was born on August 30, 1919 in Trenton, TN in Gibson County, to the late Guy Ransom Bond and the late Essie Yates Ward Bond. R.H. was a retired plant supervisor with for South Central Bell, where he worked for 43 years.
In 1960 he was a Lay Leader for the United Methodist Church in Memphis. “Red” was a delegate to the United Methodist Jurisdictional Conference for 44 years and was also a delegate to the United Methodist General Conference for 36 years. He served on various General Conference Committees, including Evangelism, Native American and Episcopacy Committee.
R.H. was twice honored by the United Methodist Church Annual Conference with Harry Denman Award for Outstanding Layman Evangelism and also traveled throughout the United States as a layman speaker for the United Methodist Church. He was a member of: Gideons for 10 years, Masons, Lions Club, Jaycees, Men’s Tell Others Prayer Breakfast for 60 + years, Boy Scouts of America and the Annual Dyer County American Heart Association Fund Raising Chairman in 1962. In 1944 he volunteered for the United States Marines and was assigned to the 5th Regiment of the 1st Marine Division.
He served in World War II in the South Pacific and China as a communication specialist and was trained in heavy weapons (invasion of Okinawa). Many people in this area know “Red” for his creation of fine wood carpentry. He cut the tree, milled the log, cured the wood, and created museum quality furniture.
He enjoyed his woodworking hobby until the age of 95. “Red” delighted neighbors and friends with his gardening specialty of home-grown tomatoes and kept a garden and greenhouse growing a variety of vegetables throughout his life. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2019 in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev.
Ed White and the Rev. Phillip Cook officiating. Burial will be in Grier’s Chapel Cemetery in Dyer, TN.
The family will receive visitors from 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2019 at Dyersburg Funeral Home. Survivors include his two daughters, Carol Elizabeth “Beth” Hamer and husband, Bill, of Birmingham, AL and Nancy Leigh West and husband, David, of Dyersburg, TN; four grandchildren, John Thomas Deere and wife, Heather, Wesley Deere and wife, Sarah, Richie Hamer and wife, Becky, and Elizabeth Nall and husband, Hubert; and five great-grandchildren, Rebekah Hamer, Maxwell William Hamer, Grace Sullivan, Lilly Sullivan and Conner Sullivan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Precious” Bond; an infant daughter, Jacqueline Ann Bond; a sister, Mary Frances Davidson; and a brother, Guy Bond.
Pallbearers will be Richie Hamer, Wesley Deere, John Thomas Deere, Hubert Nall, Jamison Gullet and Adam Fisher. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sellers Sunday School Class, the Men’s Prayer Breakfast and Joe Peevyhouse. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or to American Village, P.O. Box 6, Montevallo, AL 35223.
