Richard’s Obituary Richard L. VanFleet, 95, of Dalton, died Friday at Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was the husband of Esther L. Smith VanFleet, who died in 2017. The couple had been married 71 years.

Born Sept. 11, 1923, son of the late Leland and Edna Kroll VanFleet, he graduated from Burnham High School, Sylvania, Ohio in 1942. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

He worked as a dairy farmer in Benton Twp. , where he served on the Planning Commission. He was self-employed as an electrical/refrigeration contractor and worked for Elk Mountain.

He was a member of the Church of the Epiphany, Clarks Summit. He is survived by a son, Randy VanFleet and his wife, Nan, Douglassville; a daughter, Judy Henning and her husband, George, Hershey; five grandchildren, Michael and Sara VanFleet, and Adam, Aaron and Susan Henning; and five great-grandchildren, Avery and Nathan VanFleet, and Jordan, Paige and Maxwell Henning. The family would like to give special thanks to his personal aide, Dolores Suttles, for her years of compassionate care and to the staff at Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Svc. , 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
