Obituary of Richard Patterson Richard Paul Patterson passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz, California on November 3, 2018 at 88 years of age. He was born on August 15, 1930 in Covington, KY as the youngest of 4 boys and 2 girls. Early in his life, Richard’s family moved to New York City.

He attended Bayside High School, graduated from Seton Hall University on an athletic scholarship. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Richard was initially stationed in Germany, followed by Ft.

Ord in Monterey Bay where he met his wife of 61 years, Carol Ann. Richard and Carol married at the Carmel Mission. Shortly thereafter, they welcomed their daughter Elizabeth Ann into the world.

Richard was then sent to Korea for a year. As a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, he obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After leaving the service and returning home, Richard began a 30-year career in education in the Soquel Elementary School District.

He received his Administrative Credential from San Jose State University allowing him to serve as a Principal, and then Superintendent for 5 years until his retirement. Richard was passionate about education and athletics. He served on the founding Board of Directors for the Wharf to Wharf Race as director of transportation.

His other civic and professional activities included: Kiwanis International, Mid Co. Rotary Club, Representative to the Legislative Council for Central Coast Section, County Science Coordinating Committee, and an active member of several regional education focused associations and planning committees. Richard also enjoyed playing basketball, softball, golf, tennis, and fishing with his friends. He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann, daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Richard Bailey), granddaughters, Brianna Bailey (Mario Carbone), Arielle Allen (Travis Allen), great granddaughters, Charlotte Kathleen and Caroline Elizabeth.

He will be lovingly remembered for his joking personality, unforgettable stories, and pride of his family. Celebration of life will be private and held at the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, November 28th from 2:00 – 5:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Hospice of Santa Cruz.
